Hi Benny - sorry for the delay in my response, too! (Mine is more due to being in the ER with lobster poisoning and therefore, getting behind on comments haha.)

Since I have a few different businesses in both the edtech and e-learning space, I have a couple that use our own proprietary tech to handle everything and others that rely more on pre-built systems and the respective plugins/integrations for those. I think if you have a great, super capable in-house tech team (and want/are able to successfully own the end-to-end processes), then that can be a way to go - as long as you know your team is reliable 100% of the time.

If you aren't that confident in your team or just want less of a headache, then yes, relying on pre-built systems is a great solution and something I do quite a bit of. The biggest issue I noticed when hiring tech teams to build the proprietary tools was actually the lack of usable, extractable data. It was more of an afterthought I had to ask for and it always paled in comparison to the platform and user data I got from the pre-built systems that are more common in industries like digital marketing, e-learning, informational content, etc. I want 2 things to be guaranteed: 1. The tools are reliable (or there's a great team who can fix any issues that do surface, pretty immediately) and 2. There's good, usable data. If I can't get those 2 things out of my own proprietary platform/software, it's probably not worth using to me. But that's just me.
