Thanks Colin — glad you found it helpful! A few small tips on Screencast-O-Matic:
- I upgraded to the paid version (only $48/yr) because it also stores all the videos, so I can go back and re-use clips — you don’t have to do this, but once you have hundreds (I have over 500 in there I believe), you may want to for peace of mind (since it backs up and saves your in-progress work, even before you export and upload to a cloud or external drive)
- I would suggest downloading the desktop version and working off of that IF you have a good amount of free space on your computer. Working on the desktop version was a suggestion they gave me when mine was being glitchy once (could have been my internet) — but I also find it easier and more convenient. It’s free once you have an account, just something you might not know to download otherwise. That said, it will store those in-progress videos on your computer (even though they’re technically in the Screencast-O-Matic desktop app), so just make sure you have room or delete old files, since videos can take up a lot of space
- There is no “duplicate” function, which means in order to duplicate a video and edit a second version differently, you’ll need to download or export the first and then reupload and edit it. This isn’t a huge problem, but keep in mind that the more times you import, edit, export, and reupload a video file, it lowers the quality (this is not specific to Screencast-O-Matic, just video editing in general). You’re always better editing from the source version if possible.
- Sometimes I use Screencast-O-Matic to get a video 95% of the way done and then send it over to one of my freelancers to spruce it up or add something in, so you don’t have to get it to 100% perfection yourself, but you will save yourself a ton of money if you can do the upfront editing legwork.
I hope that was helpful! :)
